$9.8 million road work to begin on Lubbock's Ave. Q: Here's what to expect

A multi-million-dollar renovation project will begin on Monday, and will likely impact traffic along Avenue Q in Lubbock, according to the Texas Department of Transportation.

On Monday, Feb. 27, contractor Gilvin-Terrill, LTD, of Amarillo, will begin sidewalk and storm sewer work on the western side of Avenue Q and 19th Street. This is the first stage of a $9.8 million project to improve portions of US 84 (Avenue Q) between I-27 and US 82 (Marsha Sharp Freeway).

“The revitalization of Avenue Q is expected to improve safety by reducing traffic crashes and enhancing mobility for pedestrian and vehicle traffic,” Mike Wittie, P.E., TxDOT Lubbock Area Engineer. “Avenue Q is one of the city’s busiest streets for both vehicle and pedestrian traffic. During construction we urge both pedestrians and drivers to stay alert and follow all posted construction signs.”

The revitalization aims to make downtown Avenue Q more pedestrian friendly, along with:

  • Repairing and resurfacing roads.

  • Upgrading sidewalks, ADA ramps and traffic signals.

  • Adding pedestrian bulb-outs at crosswalks.

  • Upgrade lighting between I-27 and 50th St.

The contractor will progress north from Avenue Q and 19th Street. Improvements to the road surface are expected to begin in the late spring, and the project is estimated to finish in March 2024.

As the project continues, drivers should "extended mainlane and on-street parking closures, and reduced speed limits throughout the duration," according to TXDOT.
