Giving a unique wedding present you know the bride and groom are going to love is pretty much the dream, isn't it? When you know how much effort the happy couple have put into their big day, the least you can do is give them something they're going to love and use for years to come.

Especially when you think about the year brides- and grooms-to-be have had; whether they had to postpone the wedding of their dreams, or throw a slightly different version of the big day they had planned due to various lockdown restrictions. And even if they haven't just yet, there's no doubt stress attached to your Big Day being in the diary, and whether it'll be able to go ahead as you please.

So if you're hoping to go off registry and get your friends something personal (they deserve to be spoiled, after all) people on Reddit have been sharing brilliant wedding gift ideas from their own ceremonies, that stood out as memorable. Whether that's something majorly unexpected but very useful (a tool box, anyone?), or something sentimental and unique (a personalised piece of art), here are the best wedding gift ideas from the people who received them.

Wedding thank you cards

"For our wedding one of my wife's friends got us super fancy thank you cards as well as a gift certificate to a local photo shop so we could create a thank you collage of a few wedding pics to send with the cards to everyone. It was by far the most useful gift we had gotten."

A wallet filled with date night gift vouchers

Sometimes thoughtful presents are the best kind, and means you can support local businesses in the process, too, especially at a time when they may have had to close their doors for months. "My sister and brother-in-law gave my wife and I a date night wallet filled with gift cards for local dates. Best wedding gift to give if you can!"

A post-honeymoon welcome home package

"This was after the wedding, but I was the guy's best man, and I had a key to his apartment. The day before they got back from their honeymoon, I made sure to stock his fridge with food, drinks, fresh vegetables, snacks etc. so that they wouldn't have to leave the house to go grocery shopping." Now that is a nice touch.

A breakfast in bed tray

Breakfast in bed is always a good idea, and yet probably isn't something you'd have bought for yourself. "We got a bed tray. Every birthday (us or the kids) means breakfast in bed. Also anniversary, random expressions of gratitude or affection. Use it all the time, never would have thought to buy it."

A custom piece of art

"My bridesmaid is an illustrator and she drew us the most amazing picture of my husband and I floating away in a sort of steampunk balloon thing. We have it framed on the wall in our living room and it makes me smile every time I look at it."

A tool box

Quite boring, but also incredibly useful? "My old boss would give a toolbox filled with all the tools you would need, like screwdrivers, hammers, wrenches. Nobody thinks of these things when you are moving into your new house/ on to a new life, but you'll need them. Not super romantic, but useful."

A slow cooker

"Our must-have essential is a good slow cooker. I don't know how we would work full time with 4/hour a day commutes and plan a wedding without it. We meal plan once a month, put dinner in the slow cooker in the mornings before work, and we have a delicious meal by dinner. Best. gadget. ever."

A really nice photo frame

"I almost always give the couple a really nice picture frame: more often than not, they'll end up putting one of their wedding pictures in it and once a wedding picture has been framed, it's almost never moved."

Cookbooks

Having a multitude of inspiration for dinner time can sometimes be the only thing that keeps you going through the working day. Give that gift on someone's wedding day "One of the more clever gifts I got for my wedding was a set of cookbooks - two based on my ancestry (Irish and Greek) and one based on the state I lived in. All three were inscribed by the sender. 20 years later I still have them."

Bottles of wine to save for a special occasion

They might be overwhelmed by the bar on the big day, but gift them some nice Champagne or wine to look forward to opening at a later date like their anniversary. "This might be cheesy, but my brother got six bottles of wine for their wedding with a poem attached. They are supposed to crack open each bottle for a special occasion."

A nice chopping board

Whether it's for serving canapes, making a cheese board or preparing your meal, you can really never have too many. "My old man always gets the happy couple a nice, well made wooden chopping board. It's the kind of thing that no one thinks to get, but is really useful. Most people have nasty chopping boards."
