9 days of coma and several weeks in reanimation: Life of teenager taken out from under rubble saved in Lviv

In Lviv, doctors saved the life of 13-year-old Stas, who was injured during a shelling of the village of Hrushuvakha in Kharkiv Oblast in late June.

The ceiling of the house collapsed on the boy. He was taken out barely alive from under the rubble, the First Medical Association of Lviv reports.

The head suffered the most, the boy's skull had an eight-centimetre wound.

The guy spent nine days in a coma and several weeks in a reanimation in Kharkiv. Then he was taken to Lviv.

"Our paediatric neurosurgeons performed a complex operation to close a large skull defect. For this purpose, a special plate that perfectly matches the bone structures and the size of the formed opening was made," the medical institution said.

At the same time, burn surgeons tried to remove massive scars on the child's face: on the nose, bridge of the nose and near the upper lip.

"If delayed, the scars could fully form and the muscles on the face would partially lose their functionality. So, Stas could not move them, especially the upper lip," the Medical Association said.

Every month, doctors were injecting hormones into the wound areas on the child's face, which slowed down growth and softened scars, while maintaining muscle functionality and the aesthetic appearance of the face.

By now, the teenager received the last, third injection. Next is a year of rest. In case of a positive dynamic, Stas will undergo another course of injections, and if not doctors will do plastic surgery.
