Video Transcript

MARUICE DUBOIS: A gas explosion in the Bronx leaving nine people hurt including two children.

KRISTINE JOHNSON: Let's get right to CBS 2's Cory James. He's live at the scene in Morris Park. Corey.

CORY JAMES: Maurice and Kristine, that explosion was so powerful one neighbor says that it felt like an airplane was flying right over them. But take a look behind me, you can see just how forceful that gas leak in that explosion was. The windows on the second floor of this apartment building and the middle were all blown out. Now take a look at this video giving a little bit of a better view of the scene here.

We know at least nine people have been injured. Two people, we're told, in critical are children. They have all been taken to the hospital. We spoke with one man who actually says he climbed a ladder to rescue a mom and her two kids inside their apartment.

ELVIS COPE: There was an old lady that gave me like a coat, something like that, so I had to hold it right there and give it to her. And then you see the ladder right there? I have climb because there was another lady with a broken leg right there covered with some plywood and all that.

- Gas explosions, they're uncommon but they do happen. You know, if you have a gas leak and you have a source of ignition this is what-- this can happen.

CORY JAMES: And back to your lives, you're looking at a door that was actually blown off the hinges from the apartment that's across the street and made it all the way to the power lines on Paulding Avenue and Poplar Street. But here right now, Con Edison. You've got the FDNY investigators who were out here as well. As the Department of Building they are all really just trying to piece together how this all happened. Many neighbors who heard that loud boom, as they described it, are also out here as well. But again nine people, we have learned two are children. They were all taken to the hospital. Those kids we have learned are in critical condition. We, of course, will stay on top of the story, and we'll bring you the very latest as soon as we learn more developments. Right now we're live here in the Morris section of the Bronx. Cory James, CBS 2 news.

KRISTINE JOHNSON: Thinking of those families, especially those parents. Corey, thank you.
