9-month-old drowns in bathtub in North Carolina on Father’s Day, officials say

A young child died in a drowning incident in North Carolina on Father’s Day, officials said.

Emergency medical responders were not able to revive the 9-month-old after arriving to the home in Pink Hill on Sunday to find the infant had “drowned in a bathtub,” the Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook announcement.

“Any loss of a child is a terrible tragedy, especially on a special event such as Father’s Day,” Sheriff Ronnie Ingram said in a statement Sunday.

Officials responded to the home at around 2 p.m. EDT after receiving a report of “a child not breathing,” according to the sheriff’s office’s announcement.

The emergency responders and family members both conducted life-saving procedures in an effort to save the child. Officials have not publicly identified the child or any family members.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family for their loss,” Ingram said.

Authorities say they are now carrying out an investigation into whether “any criminal wrongdoing” occurred.

Pink Hill is located in eastern North Carolina, about 89 miles southeast of Raleigh.
