9-year-old critically injured after crash in Port St. Lucie; woman arrested

PORT ST. LUCIE — A 37-year-old woman was arrested on a DUI-related charge after police said Saturday she caused a multi-vehicle crash, critically injuring a 9-year-old girl who was riding in her car.

Port St. Lucie police responded about 9 p.m. Friday to the scene of the crash at Southwest Port St. Lucie and Airoso boulevards. Investigators said the woman was traveling east on Southwest Port St. Lucie Boulevard when her Nissan Altima crashed into the back of a Mercedes-Benz at the red light.

The Mercedes-Benz R350 then crashed into a Hyundai Elantra, which in turn crashed into a Hyundai Kona.

The 9-year-old girl was a passenger in the 37-year-old woman’s Nissan. The girl was flown to a hospital for treatment for critical injuries.

Police spokesman Sgt. John Dellacroce said officers could not immediately determine whether the 9-year-old girl was restrained properly in the vehicle, noting investigators were getting a search warrant for the vehicle.

The driver and passenger of the Mercedes-Benz sustained non life-threatening injuries and were taken to a local hospital. No information was available about injuries to drivers of the Hyundais.

The 37-year-old woman was treated for minor injuries at a local hospital before being arrested on a charge of DUI causing serious bodily injury to another. She was being held at Saturday on $2,500 bail at the St. Lucie County Jail.
