9-year-old girl dead after I-680 rollover crash

(KRON) — A rollover crash on Interstate 680 near Concord has resulted in four people hospitalized and the death of a 9-year-old girl, according to the California Highway Patrol.

California Highway Patrol Contra Costa was alerted of a solo vehicle crash on northbound Interstate 680 at the Highway 242 split near Concord at 5:14 a.m. on Sunday. According to CHP, a gray Mazda CX-9 was traveling northbound on I-680 when the SUV left the roadway through the dirt median that separates the two freeways. The mid-size crossover SUV overturned multiple times. There were six occupants in the SUV.

The Mazda was on its roof with several occupants ejected from the vehicle as medical personnel and CHP arrived. Four of the female occupants were transported to the hospital with major injuries.

A 9-year-old female passenger was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency personnel.

The driver was described as a Hispanic man who is approximately 30 years old, according to CHP. The driver fled the scene on foot and has not been located, according to CHP.
