9 US Cities That Will Pay You to Move There in 2023

<p><em>Median Home Rent (per month): $1,233</em></p> <p><em>Median Home Value: $183,557</em></p> <p>Through the Tusla Remote program, the second-largest city in Oklahoma is looking to grow its community by offering remote workers and entrepreneurs a $10,000 grant, a 36-month membership at a local coworking space, house-hunting support, and community-building opportunities in exchange for a minimum one-year stay (though a more permanent move is highly encouraged!). Candidates should be digital nomads and already fully employed by a company outside of Oklahoma. The program was initiated pre-pandemic, in November 2018, and is funded by the nonprofit George Kaiser Family Foundation, whose mission supports local programs that help reduce poverty in the greater Tulsa area.</p>

<p><em>Median Home Rent (per month): $1,056</em></p> <p><em>Median Home Value: $59,787</em></p> <p>About two hours northwest of Birmingham and two hours southwest of Nashville is The Shoals, an area of Alabama near the Tennessee border (and river, as seen in the photograph) that is known for its historic music scene (stars like Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan, and the Rolling Stones made hit records at the local FAME Studios). The region comprises four cities: Florence, Muscle Shoals, Sheffield, and Tuscumbia. Move to any of them as a remote worker from anywhere outside of the state’s Colbert and Lauderdale counties and the Shoals Economic Development Authority will award you up to $10,000, with the conditions that you make at least $52,000 a year and are able to relocate within six months of acceptance to the Remote Shoals program. Grant payments will be made in increments: 25% immediately to help with relocation, another 25% after six months, and the last half at the year mark in your new town.</p>

<p><em>Median Home Rent (per month): $850</em></p> <p><em>Median Home Value: $163,506</em></p> <p>Kansas’s state capital wants to bring new talent not only to its city but also to its businesses. Unlike many other relocation programs, this one rewards those who are looking for both a career and city change, as well as potentially in-person work. Through the Choose Topeka initiative, applicants who secure full-time employment with a participating company and move to Topeka within the following year can receive cash in their pockets. The program offers $10,000 for renting and $15,000 for purchasing a primary home in Shawnee County, and the funds are granted after the new Topeka resident has lived in the community for 12 months.</p>

<p><em>Median Home Rent (per month): $1,200</em></p> <p><em>Median Home Value: $182,940</em></p> <p>For remote workers that currently live more than 300 miles from downtown Rochester, New York, the Greater ROC Remote program is distributing grants worth up to $19,000 as an incentive to move to the region. Those who are able to move within six months of application acceptance will receive a $10,000 award to assist with relocation expenses, and they can apply for an additional $9,000 if they choose to purchase a home in the area as well. Participants will also be extended special opportunities to help establish a sense of community in their new home. Using data from the US Census Bureau, home valuation platform Ownerly recently ranked Rochester as the fifth best city in the country for remote workers. If you’d like to try before you buy, so to speak, Greater ROC Remote also offers qualified applicants a reimbursement of up to $500 for solo travel expenses and up to $750 for two or more people to visit and explore ahead of your decision.</p>

<p><em>Median Home Rent (per month): $1,669</em></p> <p><em>Median Home Value: $302,605</em></p> <p>Home of Purdue University, the midwestern city of West Lafayette, Indiana, has a relocation package valued at $10,000 for remote workers who’d like to take advantage of the collegiate atmosphere of the public research university. The Work from Purdue program includes a $5,000 stipend; a 50% discount on a coworking space; three months free at MatchBOX coworking; comped memberships to the Purdue University library, the Greater Lafayette Chamber of Commerce, the Purdue Alumni Association, and Care.com; a city bus pass; and a variety of other discounted and free amenities to work-from-home applicants that move to the area. Though the program originally allowed new residents to move only to the Discovery Park District, a growing community at the west end of campus, it recently expanded to include the entirety of greater Lafayette.</p>

<p><em>Median Home Rent (per month): $1,300</em></p> <p><em>Median Home Value: $251,067</em></p> <p>Home to West Virginia University, Morgantown is just one of the several cities in West Virginia that are incentivizing relocations for remote employees from out of state. The Ascend West Virginia program also includes the communities of Greenbrier Valley, the Eastern Panhandle, and Greater Elkins, and will pay $12,000 to eligible applicants who commit to two years in their new mountain home. Additional benefits include a year of free outdoor activities like skiing and whitewater rafting, a comped coworking space, group activities to help grow your social network, and opportunities for professional development, including certifications from the university’s John Chambers College of Business and Economics. The program is a public-private partnership between the state of West Virginia and entrepreneur and Intuit CEO Brad D. Smith’s Brad and Alys Smith Outdoor Economic Development Collaborative.</p>

<p><em>Median Home Rent (per month): $700</em></p> <p><em>Median Home Value: $152,067</em></p> <p>Located just 30 minutes east of Des Moines, the city of Newton, Iowa, is offering a housing initiative to new buyers that could be the perfect solution for work-from-home talents looking to become homeowners. For primary residence homes valued at $190,000 or more, the Newton Housing Development Corporation will provide a cash incentive up to $10,000, as well as a “Get to Know Newton” package valued at an additional $2,500. If you’d rather construct your own house and its value is under $190,000, the city will extend you a tax abatement through its Urban Revitalization Plan. The incentive does not require any specific employment qualifications, nor are there restrictions regarding where you may be moving from.</p>

<p><em>Median Home Rent (per month): $2,400</em></p> <p><em>Median Home Value: $424,777</em></p> <p>Known for its fantastic public schools, proliferation of eateries and parks, and close access to nature, South Burlington, Vermont, (or any city of your choosing in the state) could become your new home, with assistance from the government’s New Remote Worker Grant Program. Any applicant who works full-time remotely for an out-of-state company making more than Vermont’s living wage ($13.39 per hour) and moves to the state on or after February 1, 2022, is eligible for up to $7,500 reimbursement for closing costs on a primary residence or one month’s rent and moving expenses. Your ultimate compensation total depends on location, with the areas around Burlington, South Burlington, and Barre offering only a $5,000 maximum grant.</p>
