9 wounded in shooting outside Philadelphia bar, police say

Nine people were injured late Saturday after multiple people opened fire outside a bar in Philadelphia's Kensington neighborhood, police said.

Four of the victims were in critical condition and the other five were stable as of late Saturday, according to the police department.

Multiple people got out of a black car, fired roughly 40 shots, then fled the scene, First Deputy Police Commissioner John Stafford said in a news conference shortly after the incident. Police are still searching for the shooters and don't know a motive for the shooting yet, Stanford said.

“These individuals may have spotted someone they wanted to shoot at, exited the vehicle and just began firing,” Stanford said.

The incident happened despite widespread police presence in the area due to a nearby narcotics task force investigation, he said.

"We have some brazen individuals in this city that don't care. They don't care how many police officers are out here and some of them don't care in terms of how many people are out here," Stanford told reporters.

Gun violence: Prevention efforts are failing

The victims range in age from 23 years old to 40 years old, according to Philadelphia police.

. As of November 3, there had been 417 fatal and 1,599 nonfatal shooting victims in Philadelphia in 2022, a city database shows. There were 1,831 nonfatal and 506 fatal shooting victims in all of 2021, according to the city.

What is a mass shooting?: There's no consensus definition, but here's what you should know

The Philadelphia incident was one of three mass shootings in the U.S. this weekend, according to data from the Gun Violence Archive, which defines a mass shooting as one in which four or more people are wounded or killed by gunfire, excluding the shooter.

One of the incidents in the Gun Violence Archive happened early Saturday: Multiple people were injured in a mass shooting at a birthday party in Southside Chicago, according to the local ABC News affiliate. Around the same time, in another part of Chicago, a shooting outside a bar left three injured and one dead, the local Fox affiliate reported.
