Good morning, Memphis, where the political season is in full swing ahead of the Aug. 4 election and political signs have sprouted at many major Memphis intersection.
But, first, we're focusing on the most in-demand jobs in Bluff City.
As grocery checkout lines get longer and online job postings remain up for weeks or months at a time, it is clear the nation's labor shortage is far from ending, Niki Scheinberg reports in this story for subscribers.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a 16.7% increase in job openings nationwide in May 2022 compared to the previous year while hiring rates saw little change.
Many Memphis businesses have struggled to find workers, posting hundreds of openings every month, according to data from the Greater Memphis Chamber's Center for Economic Competitiveness. Niki describes the the five jobs with the most postings in Memphis for the past 12 months.

Commissioners consider license-plate distribution debacle
Shelby County Commissioners will give the clerk’s office another three weeks before they decide whether to ask the State of Tennessee to temporarily take over the administrative function of license plate distribution in the county, Katherine Burgess reports.
Poised to take a vote on a resolution of “no confidence” in the Shelby County Clerk’s Office, which is led by Clerk Wanda Halbert, the commissioners behind the resolution decided to hold it until August 8, since Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris’ administration now has more access and is able to get frequent reports from the clerk’s office, said Commissioner Brandon Morrison, Katherine reported.
The Public Bistro coming to Cooper-Young
Knifebird Wine Bar owner Kate Ashby will open a new restaurant in the restaurant space that was most recently Sweetgrass / Next Door. The Public Bistro is set to open in early winter 2023 at 937 Cooper St., Jennifer Chandler reports.
Ashby describes The Public as a full-service American bistro restaurant focused on simple classic American dishes. "Think if Huey's and Houston's had a baby," she said.
New event space opens in Broad Street Arts District

Grading summer league performances
Summer League basketball may have been as crucial a development stretch for the Memphis Grizzlies as any NBA team. Six of the 16 players on the NBA roster played in Summer League, and that doesn't include two-way players Kenneth Lofton Jr. and Vince Williams, reports Grizzlies beat writer Damichael Cole.
The Grizzlies went 4-4 in eight games stretched across Salt Lake City and Las Vegas. Each of Memphis' rostered players had high and low stretches, but the improvements were noticeable.
Damichael has the grades for the NBA rostered and two-way Grizzlies players from Summer League.
Calipari inducted into Conference USA Hall of Fame
Former Memphis men's basketball coach John Calipari and women's basketball All-American Tamika Whitmore are among this year's inductees into the Conference USA Hall of Fame, Evan Barnes reports.
Calipari and Whitmore were joined by Kelly-Anne Billingy (Marshall), Anthony Rotich (UTEP) and Joan Joyce (Florida Atlantic). The class was announced Monday and the ceremony will be held at a later date.
