The 901: How much does Tennessee Valley Authority rely on power from MISO?

Good morning, Memphis, where we are five days away from seeing the return of Tigers’ football as they ready up for their game against Mississippi State on Saturday.

But, first, when Memphis saw above-average temperatures in June, Tennessee Valley Authority relied on its competitor, Midcontinent Independent Systems Operator, for power, our Samuel Hardiman reports.

Analysis of federal energy data from the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy shows that TVA leaned on MISO to import about 8% to 9% of its electricity during four crucial days in June.

The data, SACE executives argue, undercuts a key talking point that TVA has used in its ongoing bid to keep Memphis Light, Gas and Water buying electricity — it's the most reliable source.

An influx of federal and local cash to the Memphis Area Transit Authority could help improve how Shelby County residents get around for years, Samuel reports in his story for subscribers.

Together, the federal and local cash promises to revamp the bus system and make it greener.

"That is a lot of money. A lot of money but it's coming to the right place to do the right thing," said Nuria Fernandez, Federal Transit Administration Administrator.

Craig Brewer, a film director from Memphis, speaks to young filmmakers at Indie Memphis Youth Film Fest Saturday. His presentation focused on the nuts and bolts of storytelling.

For the first time since 2019, the Indie Memphis Youth Film Fest was back in the Halloran Centre — with Memphis native director Craig Brewer kicking the event off, Lucas reports.

"I stayed involved with the festival because I felt it was so crucial for it to grow. The one thing that I felt like the festival could do better was outreach. Festivals are weird, because ultimately, it's for audiences to see a bunch of different types of movies. But the outreach that needed to happen — I think now it's the thing that is the most special part about Indie Memphis as an organization," Brewer said.

During the event, nine young filmmakers were also able to ask Brewer questions.
