The 901: Small Business Saturday, football and feasts revisited

River City Records opened earlier this year and is preparing for its first Small Business Saturday.

Good Black Friday morning, Memphis, where we're shopping at brick-and-mortar stores as well as online retailers and figuring out how to turn the mounds of leftover turkey, stuffing and cranberry sauce into a sandwich.

But, first, we're also getting ready for another edition of Small Business Saturday, amid supply-chain challenges, as our Gina Butkovich writes about here.

Small supermarket coming to Downtown

The idea behind Big River Market was a relatively simple one: Nick Barbian was tired of having to drive to the Kroger on Union Avenue or Cordelia’s Market for a few quick grocery items, our Corinne Kennedy reports.

A resident of the South Main area, Barbian thought about the corner markets and bodegas he frequented when he lived in New York, Chicago, London and Austin and thought he could replicate the concept in Memphis.

"It started out being something for me, and it turned out it was something my neighbors also wanted," he said.

Collierville's oldest business

If you have visited Collierville Town Square, it's likely you passed the only gas station there — and the oldest business in town.

McGinnis Oil Company sits on the east side of the square facing the gazebo. It's not your traditional self-serve modern gas station, though: Employees run out to cars and fill up tanks using old pumping stations, our Dima Amro reports in this story for subscribers.

Owner Bill Cox, 67, often sits on the wooden swing hanging from the ceiling at the front of the store, watching new and old faces stop to fill gas, take pictures or just stare questioningly.

Now what do I do with all of this leftover turkey?

The day after Thanksgiving, when your refrigerator is a graveyard of turkey-day odds and ends, don't reach for the trash bag. Instead, make some of these tried and true recipes, Mackensy Lunsford of our sister publication, Southern Kitchen, reports in this story.

Some of them are rather whimsical (looking at you, stuffing-waffle sandwich) while others are downright fancy, like the gnocchi with gruyere sauce.

Others, like the tetrazzini and King Ranch casserole, can be frozen and saved for another dinner when you're, you know, not so sick of turkey.

Tigers face Iowa State tonight in NYC; football Tigers play Tulane on Saturday night in must-win home game for a bowl bid

Mark Giannotto revisits the Tigers' Wednesday night victory over Virginia Tech in this story for subscribers. Here's an excerpt:

Virginia Tech could not have simulated better circumstances against Memphis basketball on Wednesday night.

Emoni Bates played like an overwhelmed 17-year-old freshman under the bright lights for the first time, instead of a future NBA lottery pick.

Freshman big man Jalen Duren was saddled to the bench before halftime with two fouls and didn’t score until more than 30 minutes of action had passed.

Tigers coach Penny Hardaway started his five best players on paper – Bates, Landers Nolley II, Lester Quinones, DeAndre Williams and Duren – and the unit wasn’t particularly effective.

Our Erik Hall has the relevant details on the Memphis-Iowa State game tonight.

Meanwhile, the Memphis football team (5-6, 2-5) needs a win to become bowl eligible for the eighth consecutive season. Tulane (2-9, 1-6) is the last thing standing in the Tigers' way of doing so on Saturday (6:30 p.m., ESPN2) at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium, our Evan Barnes reports in this story.

The Tigers, who have two home losses, haven't lost three home games in a season since 2013. They also haven't lost at home to Tulane since 1998.

Memphis will honor its seniors who are potentially playing their last game.

Enjoy the rest of your holiday weekend.
