911 call log reveals details of Jayme Closs' escape from Jake Patterson

GORDON - Jeanne Nutter was walking her dog in the Douglas County Town of Gordon when she saw a thin, unkempt teenage girl.

"I'm Jayme Closs," said the 13-year-old, begging for help.

Nutter and her neighbors, Peter and Kristin Kasinskas, would go on to contact authorities on Jan. 10 saying they'd located the Barron teenager who had been missing for 88 days. Jayme was found after she escaped the home of Jake Thomas Patterson, 21, who is accused of killing her parents, James and Denise Closs, on Oct. 15 and taking the teen against her will.

After the carefully planned abduction, prosecutors allege, Patterson held Jayme in the Gordon residence for nearly three months, concealing her when he had people over.

According to court documents, Patterson left the home Thursday and forced Jayme to lay under a bed while he was gone, as had been his practice throughout her captivity. Jayme pushed away the bins stacked with weights he used to block the bed, put on a pair of his shoes and fled the home.

Nutter, a retired social worker, previously told USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin that she took Jayme to the Kasinskas home in Eau Claire Acres neighborhood and asked them to call 911. Jayme appeared physically fine, Nutter said, but looked to be in shock.

A transcript of the 911 call from Patterson's neighbors, published in full by WCCO in Minnesota, reveals further details of teen's dramatic escape. Nutter told the dispatcher she brought Jayme to the Kasinskas' residence because her cabin is too close to Patterson's home. She urged police to hurry because they were afraid Patterson would show up.

In her four years in the area, Nutter said on the call, Patterson had never been friendly or talked to her.

As Nutter talked to the dispatcher, Jayme sat wrapped in a blanket inside the Kasinskas home. The neighbors also suggested Jayme pet Nutter's dog for comfort, WCCO reported.

Patterson was charged in Barron County Monday with two counts of first-degree intentional homicide, one count of kidnapping and one count of armed burglary. He is being held on a $5 million cash bail.

Douglas County District Attorney Mark Fruehauf said Monday that further charges may come out of that county in the coming weeks.
