EVANSVILLE, Ind. – An 18-year-old man faces multiple preliminary counts of attempted murder after police say he shot three people at an East Side home Tuesday night.

Daniel Lawrence Alvey was booked into the Vanderburgh County jail Wednesday morning. According to the arrest affidavit, one of the shooting victims told a detective they believed Alvey was the gunman.

Two of the three victims were shot in the head, suffering "life-threatening injuries," Evansville police said. The nature of the third victim’s condition hasn’t been released.

The shootings occurred around 5:45 p.m. at a home in the 800 block of Kirkwood Drive. One of the victims was carrying groceries inside from the garage when a man holding a handgun and wearing a camouflage ski mask approached them.

The victim later he said he knows Alvey from church and recognized his voice. The man in the mask reportedly demanded that the victim bring his brother outside.

“Eventually, (the victim) reported that the male began firing,” the affidavit states.

Another man on scene said he saw the shooter “in his garage firing rounds into the home.” When the shooter entered the home, the man ran upstairs to grab a baseball bat. While upstairs, he heard more shots and then reportedly chased the shooter out the front door. He claims he hit the shooter’s car with the bat.

When the shooter left, the man found three people had been shot.

In 911 audio obtained by the Courier & Press, a caller inside the home begged dispatchers to send police and ambulances as soon as possible.

The caller also named a potential suspect who is not Alvey. On Tuesday night, EPD spokeswoman Sgt. Anna Gray said investigators had identified a man they wanted to “speak with.” The man was detained by Warrick County officials later that evening but eventually released.

According to the affidavit, video from a neighboring home showed the suspect leaving south on Kirkwood Drive in a “dark-colored vehicle with a loud noise coming from the exhaust.” U.S. Marshals later found Alvey at a home in Pike County, Indiana. A blue Honda Accord with cut exhaust pipes was parked outside.

Alvey reportedly admitted to driving the Accord in Evansville earlier that day, and that he’d “hit something.”

He allegedly told police he owns a black 9mm handgun. Investigators obtained a search warrant for his home on Stringtown Road and found the weapon inside, the affidavit states. The serial number had been altered. Alvey could also face a misdemeanor charge for that.

Alvey’s charges hadn’t been entered into court records as of Wednesday afternoon.
