UPDATE: Shelby Township man killed in Tuesday multi-vehicle crash on I-94

A 67-year-old man from Shelby Township was killed in the multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 94 in Casco Township early Tuesday that also sent four others to the hospital.

According to news release Wednesday, Stephen Chapman was driving a 2018 Dodge Ram 3500 on westbound I-94 at Church Road when he did not stop in time and rear-ended a 2010 GMC Acadia.

The initial collision caused a five-car pileup.

Chapman was pronounced dead on scene, according to the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department.

A 33-year-old woman from Port Huron, who was driving the Acadia, and 9-year-old, 10-year-old, and 15-year-old passengers were all transported initially McLaren Macomb with serious injuries. The 10-year-old was later transported to Detroit Children’s Hospital in critical condition.

A 29-year-old Port Huron man and the driver of a 2008 Honda Civic was transported to McLaren Port Huron with serious injuries.

Two other vehicles — a 2023 F-150 and 2010 Dodge Ram 3500 — were impacted, but their drivers were not hospitalized for their injuries.

The sheriff’s department is crediting good Samaritans who stopped to assist and give first aid to the injured in Tuesday’s crash.

Drugs or alcohol were not believed to be a factor in the crash, which kept the area of I-94 closed to traffic for several hours.
