940 new COVID-19 cases reported Saturday in Virginia

The Virginia Department of Health reported 940 coronavirus cases Saturday, bringing the state’s tally to 76,373.

Of the total cases, 73,420 are confirmed and 2,953 are probable, meaning those patients are symptomatic and have a known exposure to the illness.

At least 2,025 Virginians have died from the virus as of Wednesday morning, up 12 from Friday.

Throughout the state, there have been 7,531 cases in long-term care facilities and 1,192 deaths, according to data from the VDH.

The state’s seven-day percentage of positive PCR tests remained the same at 7.6%. Virginia reported 12,961 new PCR tests were performed, bringing the total to 886,748.

The number of people currently hospitalized for COVID-19 is 1,166, according to the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association. Of those, 745 have confirmed cases and 421 are awaiting test results. So far, 9,976 COVID-19 patients have been discharged. As of Wednesday morning, 20% of the state’s ventilators are in use.

Here are the latest numbers for the region compared to Friday. The large number represents the number of cases reported in each locality since the pandemic began.

James City: 402 (up 6); 16 deaths (no change)

Mathews: 7 (no change); 0 deaths (no change)

Middlesex: 18 (no change); 0 deaths (no change)

Newport News: 1,029 (up 45); 13 deaths (up 3)

Norfolk: 2,134 (up 114); 19 deaths (no change)

Northampton: 278 (up 1); 28 deaths (no change)

Poquoson: 25 (up 1); 0 deaths (no change)

Portsmouth: 925 (up 53); 20 deaths (no change)

Suffolk: 701 (up 25); 44 deaths (no change)

Virginia Beach 2,464 (up 68); 36 deaths (up 2)

Williamsburg: 91 (no change); 6 deaths (no change)

York: 200 (up 9); 3 deaths (no change)

In Virginia, people older than 80 account for 3,836 cases and 1,014 deaths. Here’s how the rest of the age groups break down for cases and deaths:

70-79: 3,818 cases, 511 deaths

60-69: 7,289 cases, 298 deaths

50-59: 11,219 cases, 126 deaths

40-49: 13,090 cases, 54 deaths

30-39: 14,106 cases, 16 deaths

20-29: 13,875 cases, 4 deaths

10-19: 5,706 cases, 0 deaths

0-9: 2,597 cases, 0 deaths

The VDH did not report ages for 837 cases and two deaths.

Norfolk: 15.7% (same)

Peninsula: 9.4% (up)

Virginia Beach: 11.8% (up)

Western Tidewater: 10.0% (up)

Since the pandemic began in Virginia, 38,709 women have had cases and 1,006 women have died, while 37,180 men have had cases and 1,012 men have died. Of the state tally, 484 cases don’t have a reported sex and 7 deaths don’t have a reported sex.
