Update: I-95 on-ramp reopened Monday after fatal officer-involved shooting in Hardeeville

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.

One person is dead following an officer-involved shooting Monday morning in Hardeeville, and at least three officers from two agencies have been put on administrative leave.

Officers from the Hardeeville Police Department were called around 4:15 a.m. about a road-rage incident in which a person shot at a vehicle, according to Chief Deputy Jeff Crosby with the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office and Chief Sam Woodward with the Hardeeville Police Department.

A short chase began near Exit 8 in Hardeeville off Brooks Willis Drive and shots were exchanged between police and the suspect, resulting in the suspect’s death.

The Exit 8 northbound on-ramp of I-95 was shut down for most of the day Monday because of the investigation. The ramp was reopened to traffic about 1:45 p.m., Crosby said.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating, a spokesperson from the agency confirmed.

Names and other identifying details about the person who was killed will not be released until the family has been notified, Woodward said.

At least two officers from the Hardeeville Police Department have been put on administrative leave. One deputy from the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office has been put on leave.

Placing officers on leave during an investigation such as this, Crosby said, is “standard protocol.”
