IREDELL COUNTY, NC — The tally of new known coronavirus cases in Iredell County has risen to 3,485 — an increase of 98 cases since Friday, Iredell County Health Department reported Tuesday.
While cases rose sharply, the number of COVID-19 deaths stayed flat at 43 deaths, ICHD said.
As of Oct. 13, ICHD said 11 county residents remained hospitalized for COVID-19 illness.
North Carolina reported 234,481 confirmed coronavirus cases in the state Tuesday, which included 1,734 cases confirmed since Monday, according to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.
Last week, North Carolina's top public health official acknowledged that coronavirus trends were taking a turn in the wrong direction in the state. "Our cases have ticked up, as have the percent that have tested positive and hospitalizations," DHHS Secretary Mandy Cohen said.

1,370 cases (up from 1,329 cases reported Oct. 9)
Globally, nearly 38 million people have been infected by COVID-19, and more than 1 million people have died, Johns Hopkins University reported Tuesday. In the United States, more than 7.8 million people have been infected and more than 215,000 people have died from COVID-19.
