A True 80s Revival: Is The Perm Making A Comeback?

Kylie Minogue was spotted out and about in London over the weekend, sporting one excellent perm. And, naturally, it caused some excitement - and some debate.

Are perms making a comeback? Should they make a comeback? And how does one get perm pretty at home?

The singer sported a perm when we first grew to love her, back in the 80s when she was a fresh young thing on “Neighbours”. But for the majority of appearances since then, she’s had straight locks that have been more suited to the beauty trends of the past two-and-a-half decades.

The beauty world’s been buzzing about the return of the perm for some months now, since curls Carrie Bradshaw would be proud of bobbed their way down catwalks at Fashion Week AW16, including Prada and Diana Von Furstenberg.

But we’re not all models with hairstylists on hand, and we can’t all afford to go get a perm just because Kylie Minogue has one. Plus, there are a few things to consider before going for a perm, says celebrity hair stylist Mark Hill. It’s not a case of just grabbing the perming lotion and applying it - there’s a lot of effort involved.

“A perm actually changes the structure of your hair – basically the perming lotion breaks bonds inside the hair and then the neutralizer fixes the bond back together to form the new shape around the roller,” Mark told us.

“Leave the lotion on too long and you run the risk of hair breakage, not leaving it on long enough means it won’t take. On coloured hair you also add the risk of hair become dry and damaged. If you do fancy to a perm, always seek the advice of a professional.

“They will do the necessary skin and strand tests and ensure your hair is perm ready. They’ll also advise you on how to look after your hair at home as you will probably need to change your hair care routine.”

The good news? Kylie’s look is one that can be replicated at home - and on a semi-permanent basis.

“You can get the look by using a small wand or tong,” explains Mark. “I would recommend you use the Wicked Waver.

“Take small sections of hair, spray with Heat Protection Spray and then wrap spirally round the barrel. Hold for a few seconds and then unwind. Gorgeous curls without the damage.”
