An AA van got stuck in the sand on a beach alongside the car it was called to recover.

A photo taken on Porth Beach in Newquay on Sunday morning showed the recovery vehicle deep in sand next to the car it had originally been tasked to retrieve.

A group of people were pictured trying to free both vehicles from the sand at about 10am.

The AA van's driver was one of those working hard to free its wheels, while a white Ford C-Max car was also stuck on the beach.

A child's pink beach spade was planted in the sand next to the AA van.

Beachgoer Lisa Hammond said it took a "good half an hour to 45 minutes" for the group to free both vehicles from the sand.

She said it is not the first time such an incident has occurred.

She said a sign "really needs to be put in place" on the beach.

"It took about eight people to finally push them out of the sand", said Ms Hammond.

"They pushed out the AA van first and then the car.

"It's time for a really big sign to be put in place because I do think a warning is needed as it's happening frequently.

"It's the second AA truck that's got stuck in the past month and the last one needed a tow truck to get it out."

At Easter, it took half a dozen people to free a Volkswagen Transporter van on Porth Beach, only days after a Mazda car was trapped there.

More than a dozen cars have been rescued from Great Wester Beach in Newquay in the space of a year, according to reports.
