PANAMA CITY − The American Automobile Association is activating its "Tow to Go" campaign for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend to help keep drunken or high drivers off the roads.

The program is available throughout Florida.

"This is the 25th year The Auto Club Group has provided the Tow to Go program," the Auto Club said in a news release. "When called upon, the Auto Club Group dispatches a tow truck to transport the impaired person and their vehicle to a safe location within a 10-mile radius for free."

Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA, said the Tow to Go service is intended as a last line of defense during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

"If you plan to consume alcohol or drugs this weekend, make plans for a safe ride home first. If your plans fall through, you can call AAA and we’ll get you to a safe place," he said in the release.

Tow to Go is active from 6 p.m. Wednesday to 6 a.m. Monday. Appointments cannot be scheduled in advance, as AAA insists the program be used as a last resort for people who need it. But it is a free program if communities need the service.

The DUI law enforcement patrol in Bay County, Panama City and Panama City Beach will be out from Saturday evening to Sunday morning.
