Aaron Jones confident about backup QB after Aaron Rodgers announces he wants to play for Jets

Green Bay Packers running back Aaron Jones has high hopes for possible starting quarterback Jordan Love after Aaron Rodgers announced he wants to play for the New York Jets next season.

"If Jordan Love has to step in, he's more than ready," Jones said on SiriusXM NFL radio.

"Jordan has made a good jump, especially this past year. You can see it in practice throwing dimes ... it might be time. He's going to show he can do this at a high level."

The 29-year-old native El Pasoan's contract was restructured during the offseason. The Packers demanded a $5 million salary cut from $16 million to $11 million and in turn converted $8.52 million of Jones’ salary into a guaranteed signing bonus, according to reports and sources with access to NFL salary information.

Love is entering his fourth season and the Packers can exercise his fifth-year option before the May deadline. It will guarantee Love $20.2 million in 2024, but this season he will play for the $2,298,652 base salary in his rookie contract.

Though Love has three years under his belt, he has started only one game, played 157 snaps and thrown 83 passes.

Is Aaron Rodgers going to the Jets?

Aaron Rodgers said Wednesday in an interview on "The Pat McAfee Show," he intends to play for the New York Jets in 2023 after 18 seasons in Green Bay and the four-time NFL MVP quarterback is waiting for the Packers to trade him.

The 39-year-old Rodgers said he believes the Packers want to move on and make 2020 first-round draft pick Jordan Love their starting quarterback.

“At this point, as I sit here, I think since Friday I’ve made it clear that my intention was to play and my intention was to play for the New York Jets,” Rodgers said. “I haven’t been holding anything up at this point. It’s been compensation the Packers are trying to get for me, kind of digging their heels in.”
