Aaron Rodgers says during the Pebble Beach Pro-Am that he's 'not going to San Fran' to play for the 49ers

You apparently can check the San Francisco 49ers off the list of potential teams Aaron Rodgers may play for in 2023.

At least that's what the Packers quarterback is saying — though to be fair he was asked the question right before he teed off at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am golf tournament on Thursday in California.

"Got any news you want to share with us?" golf broadcaster Colt Knost asked Rodgers as he was about to hit on a par 3 hole on the Spyglass Hill course.

Rodgers had a smile for the former PGA Tour player, who is now a member of the CBS golf team. CBS is broadcasting the event on Saturday and Sunday.

"Not going to San Fran," Rodgers said about his childhood team after he put his tee in the ground and took some practice swings before firing his shot that just spun off the green onto the fringe.

Knost, who lives in Dallas, replied that Rodgers would look great with a Cowboys star on his helmet, which drew a laugh from the crowd gathered at the tee box.

Pebble Beach is a couple hours to the south of San Francisco along the California coast, so there were likely plenty of 49ers fans in attendance.

What is Aaron Rodgers' contract situation, and will he retire?

Rodgers is under contract with the Packers for next season, but speculation continues to be high since he has acknowledged he needs time to process whether football still "fits" into his life. Rodgers, 39, has contemplated retirement in recent years and recognized in interviews that he understands the Packers could turn to Jordan Love, the team's first-round draft pick in 2020. In order for Rodgers to play for another team, the Packers would have to trade him.

For their part, the Packers' decision-makers have said publicly they want Rodgers back for his 19th season. Rodgers is owed $59.5 million in 2023. Rodgers, who said last offseason that he would "definitely" finish his career in Green Bay, discussed a possible trade during an interview on "The Pat McAfee Show" on Jan. 17.

“I don’t think we’d get in the situation, in that imaginary world, where there’d be a trade to a team I don’t want to go to,” Rodgers told McAfee.

Aaron Rodgers, left, talks with former NFL quarterback Alex Smith before the start of the putting challenge event of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am golf tournament on Wednesday in Pebble Beach, California. Smith and Rodgers are forever linked from the 2005 NFL draft. Smith was taken No. 1 overall by the San Francisco 49ers, Rodgers' childhood team, while Rodgers fell to the Packers at No. 24.

Aaron Rodgers trade rumors have been rampant in recent weeks

Rodgers' indecision and the fact that the Packers may want to give Love an opportunity has led to rampant trade rumors since Green Bay's season ended last month. This week, a former Packers wide receiver added to the fire during a Twitter session when he implied he would like to see Rodgers come to Las Vegas, a team also in need of a quarterback.

The 49ers' quarterback situation is one to watch because of the number of QBs they funneled through last season due to significant injuries. They rode rookie Brock Purdy to the NFC championship game after previous starters Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo suffered season-ending injuries at different points in 2022. Garoppolo, who is a free agent, likely won't be back, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said during his season-ending news conference this week. Purdy, meanwhile, is recovering from a major injury of his own he sustained in the NFC title game.

Aaron Rodgers and Ben Silverman off to a good start at Pebble Beach Pro-Am

As far as the golf tournament is concerned, Rodgers is teaming with professional Ben Silverman of Canada for the event. They are tied for third after the first round.

Rodgers and Silverman tee off again for the second round at 12:42 p.m. Central time Friday and then at 11:47 a.m. Saturday. Sunday times have not been announced yet.
