AAUW requests nominations for 'Woman Making History' award

GAYLORD — The American Association of University Women Gaylord area branch is seeking nominations for the organization's 2023 “Woman Making History” award.

Traditionally, the award has gone to a woman who is “first in her field” and who also continues to make a difference in Otsego County.

The 2022 recipient was Betty Hartmann, who moved to Gaylord in 1977. Hartmann was an educator and administrator for over two generations of students at Elmira in the Gaylord Community Schools. During that time, she was a literacy proponent by spearheading Reading Recovery and Reading Is Fundamental. She is one of the first members of ARTA, a master gardener and leader in the Edelweiss Garden Club, and a lector at Saint Mary for over 40 years.

The woman selected this year will be honored at the American Association of University Women's (AAUW) 30th annual “Woman Making History” luncheon in March, which is also a celebration of “Women in History” month.

To nominate a woman making history in Otsego County, nomination forms are available on the AAUW website. Submit them to AAUW Gaylord Area Branch, Attn: Renee Elias, P.O. Box 1455, Gaylord, MI 49734, or email the nomination form to relias@rocketmail.com.
