Abandoned baby found dead in trash on University of Tampa campus

TAMPA, Fla. (WJW) – An abandoned infant was found dead on the University of Tampa campus Sunday evening.

According to a press release from the Tampa Police Department, officers responded to a report of a dead infant near McKay Hall just before 7 p.m.

Once they arrived at the scene, officers found the newborn girl wrapped in a towel and placed in a garbage bin, according to the release.

The body of the infant was taken to the Medical Examiner’s office for autopsy.

Officers also found the mother of the child and took her to a nearby hospital, according to the release.

“The loss of a child is always a tragedy,” Chief Bercaw said. “As our department actively investigates this incident, we want all expectant mothers to know there are resources available.”

The State of Florida has a Safe Haven Law, which is a law that gives parents the right to surrender an unharmed newborn who is seven days old or younger. Infants can be surrendered to any Fire Station, EMS station, or hospital staffed by full-time emergency medical technicians, paramedics, or firefighters, according to the Tampa Police Department.

This case remains under investigation. No other details have been provided at this time.
