Abandoned border deal shows GOP lawmakers under the control of Donald Trump | Opinion

Republicans in Congress have just given the game away. Over the past year they have demanded a border security bill. The Senate brought forth a bi-partisan bill that was welcomed by the Border Patrol union. Then House Speaker Mike Johnson announced the bill was dead on arrival (“Republicans pull out as border deal collapses,” Feb. 7).

For Republicans it seems to have become second nature to put party before country and people. They seem to take pride in playing politics rather than governing. Once news spread that a deal was close at hand, former President Donald Trump and Johnson came out strongly against the bill, even throwing some of their own under the bus to kill the bill. Republicans in both houses followed suit and the bill never saw the light of day.

The Congressional Republican’s irresponsibility is breathtaking. Their actions place our country and people at risk. The Republicans we sent to Washington D. C. are no longer the voice of the people. They are political marionettes. Marionettes have no spine, no will, no intellect. They are totally controlled by the individual holding the strings.

Republicans in Congress are abandoning our democracy by choosing to serve a dictatorial master rather than the people they took an oath to represent. Once our great experiment with democracy is gone, we, the people, may not be able to bring it back.
