Abandoned building in Craigsville catches fire, will be left to smolder

CRAIGSVILLE — A factory that has been abandoned for decades caught fire overnight Friday in Craigsville and the building is being left to smolder, according to Chief Greg Schacht of Augusta County Fire-Rescue.

Schacht said the blaze was called in at 4 a.m.

Crews cleared the scene Friday morning, and Schacht said Craigsville authorities will monitor the building throughout the day. "It is unsafe to make entry," he noted.

The abandoned building sits at the intersection of Little River Road and Brown Ridge Lane. It is the former building for Lehigh Portland Cement, which was reportedly closed in the late 1960s.
