‘Abbott Elementary’ dominates Golden Globe nominations; ‘Wakanda Forever’ and ‘Avatar’ get nods

Quinta Brunson, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Zendaya and others are nominated in some of the biggest categories.

The Golden Globes are almost here. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA ) has announced the nominations for the “80th Annual Golden Globe Awards,” set to air on NBC and Peacock at the top of next year.

Some of the year’s biggest shows like “Abbott Elementary” and “House of the Dragon” are among the TV nominees, while titles like “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” and “Avatar: The Way of Water” were recognized in the film nominations.

Leading the television category with five nominations is Quinta Brunson’s critically acclaimed ABC mockumentary series, “Abbott Elementary.” It is nominated for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy, Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy (Brunson), Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy (Janelle James and Sheryl Lee Ralph) and Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy (Tyler James Williams).

Other nominations in coveted television categories include Zendaya for her Emmy Award-winning turn as Rue in HBO’s “Euphoria,” Donald Glover for his performance in “Atlanta” and Niecy Nash for “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.”

The film nominees also boast some of the biggest projects in cinema this year, including Marvel’s box office smash, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” The film earned two nominations, one for Angela Bassett’s turn as Queen Ramonda and another for Rihanna’s original song in the film, “Lift Me Up.” This marks the first-ever Golden Globes acting nomination for a Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film.

“Avatar: The Way of Water,” which reunites original cast members Zoe Saldaña and Sam Worthington and introduces newcomers like Bailey Bass, earned one of the biggest nominations of the night: Best Motion Picture – Drama.

As theGrio previously reported, the upcoming telecast will mark the return of the Golden Globes to television — it was not televised last year — after backlash over the HFPA’s lack of diversity among its nominees and voting body. The group has since made efforts to increase diversity. In September, for instance, it announced that its voting body now “represents 62 different countries.” It is “52% female, 51.5% racially and ethnically diverse, with 19.5% Latinx, 12% Asian, 10% Black and 10% Middle Eastern.”

Emmy Award-winning comedian, writer and actor Jerrod Carmichael is set to host the “80th Annual Golden Globe Awards” ceremony, which is scheduled to air live at 8 p.m. ET on Jan. 10 on NBC and Peacock.
