ABC Shuts Down Rumors of Whoopi Goldberg Leaving 'The View'

From Good Housekeeping

  • In July, The View co-star Whoopi Goldberg was interviewed in The New York Times Magazine.

  • After the 63-year-old actress told reporters that being on The View wasn't "enough" for her, rumors began to circulate that she was getting ready to leave the ABC program.

  • An ABC spokesperson has put those rumors to bed though, saying that "all" the 2019 cast members will be on the show in "the year ahead."

  • This October, Whoopi announced that she will be jetting off to London to reprise the role of Deloris Van Cartier in Sister Act: The Musical for select performances in July 2020.

First, everyone was abuzz about the possibility of Meghan McCain leaving The View. Then, similar rumors began swirling about Whoopi Goldberg.

It all began after Whoopi's interview with The New York Times Magazine in July. When asked what kind of creative fulfillment she got from moderating the daytime program, she responded, "it's my job." What's more, Whoopi straight up said that her job on The View was simply not "enough" for her.

"It’s not. Ten years is a long time, and now I’m starting to do other stuff," Whoopi said.

That "other stuff" includes creating the new size-inclusive fashion line Dugbee, selling and promoting medical cannabis products, and, as she revealed in October, heading back to the stage next July (she'll be reprising the role of Deloris Van Cartier in London's Sister Act: The Musical for six weeks).

Wait, does this actually mean Whoopi is leaving The View?

At the moment, View fans have nothing to worry about — at least, that's what an ABC spokesperson said in July.

"The co-hosts and The View have had an incredible season, and we expect them all back for an epic year ahead," an ABC spokesperson told multiple sources.

This is the second time The View has had to fend off cast departure rumors in the past few months. In early July, a Daily Beast article ignited gossip about Meghan walking away from the show. The report stated that the conservative host was feeling "emotionally drained, angry, and isolated" and like "a caged animal" when showing up to work.

But despite all of the hearsay, it looks like both Whoopi and Meghan will be back for the entirety of season 23. As for Whoopi's London gig, she'll be starring in performances beginning July 29 and continue acting throughout the month of August — around the same time The View usually takes its month-long hiatus. She might miss an episode here and there, but otherwise you can expect to see Whoopi on the show doing her thing.
