ABC's 20/20 to air two-hour special on South Carolina's Murdaugh crime saga Friday

ABC's "20/20" is planning to air a two-hour, true-crime special on the ongoing Murdaugh crime saga in South Carolina that will include reporting from The Hampton County Guardian, a part of the USA TODAY Network, along with commentary and narrative storytelling from Guardian Editor Michael M. DeWitt, Jr.

The special will air at 9 p.m., Friday, Jan. 14 on ABC, then again the next day on Hulu.

The Hampton County Guardian is the hometown newspaper for Hampton County, home of the Murdaugh family. The paper has covered the family since before Alex Murdaugh's great-grandfather founded his law firm in 1910. DeWitt has covered this crime saga since 2015 and, as the hometown editor, has a personal knowledge of all the key players in this case.

This episode of “20/20” documents the latest details in the developing story on the Murdaugh family murders, the alleged financial crimes of Alex Murdaugh and other events surrounding the family.

The family first made headlines when Alex's son, 19-year-old Paul Murdaugh, was involved in a boat accident that killed Mallory Beach in 2019. The family made news again last summer when Paul and his mother, Maggie Murdaugh, were shot and killed and reportedly discovered by Alex.

“20/20” reports on questions about past tragedies surrounding the family. These include Alex allegedly stealing insurance settlement money intended for the family of Murdaugh housekeeper, Gloria Satterfield, after she fell and died while working on their property in 2018; questions about the suspicious roadside death of Stephen Smith in 2015, and how authorities re-opened the case based on information gathered during the investigation into Paul and Maggie’s murders; and just a few months ago, Alex allegedly hiring a hitman to kill him so his other son could collect insurance money.

The two-hour “20/20” features exclusive interviews with Renee and Philip Beach, who open up about the loss of their daughter, Mallory.

The program also features interviews with Mandy Matney, host of the “Murdaugh Murders” podcast; Sandy Smith, Smith’s mother; Stephanie Smith, Smith’s twin sister; Ginger Hadwin, Eric Harriott, Jr. and Scott Harriott, siblings of Satterfield; and Brian Harriott and Michael “Tony” Satterfield, Satterfield’s sons.
