HUTCHINSON, Kan. — In 2022, Ludvig Aberg won the Ben Hogan Award, college golf's equivalent to the Heisman Trophy. He's one of 10 semifinalists for this year's award and building a case to win it again.

The Texas Tech senior won the Big 12 tournament individual championship Wednesday, shattering the event's scoring record with his fourth consecutive round in the 60s at Prairie Dunes Country Club. The Swedish star closed with a 1-under-par 69.

That took him to 15-under-par 265, breaking the record for strokes in relation to by par by six. The old record for score in relation to par was 9-under, set by Oklahoma State's Rickie Fowler in 2008 and equaled by Texas Tech's Chris Ward in 2010, both at the par-72 Whispering Pines in Trinity, north of Houston.

The 72-hole record for lowest cumulative score was 276 set by Oklahoma State's Morgan Hoffman in 2009 and tied by Texas' Cole Hammer in 2021. Both, however, were 4-under scores on the par-70 Prairie Dunes.

Aberg put himself in position to break the marks by shooting 67-66 on Monday's 36-hole first day and 7-under 63 in Tuesday's third round.

Even with a couple of back-nine bogeys on Wednesday, he left all pursuers far in his wake. Oklahoma State's Jonas Baumgartner (70) was the runner-up at 7-under, and Texas' Brian Stark (66) was third at 6-under.

Aberg joined Hoffman as the tournament's only two-time winner, but became the first to do it in back-to-back years. Hoffman won the 2009 and 2011 titles at Prairie Dunes.

Texas Tech finished third in the team standings at 21-over. Oklahoma won the team championship, shooting 1-under. TCU was second at 17-over.

Tech sophomore Calum Scott (73) tied for 12th at 8-over, and junior Tyran Snyders (74) tied for 19th at 10-over. Red Raiders freshman Matthew Comegys closed with a 76 to finish 25-over. Senior Jack Wall had Tech's discard score, a 78, in the final round. Wall subbed into the lineup for junior Baard Skogen, who played the first three rounds.

Texas Tech will be the No. 6 seed in the NCAA Pullman Regional that Washington State will host at the Palouse Ridge Golf Club.

NCAA regional tournaments are scheduled for May 8-10 at six sites, each with 12 teams and six individuals. From each regional, the top five teams and the lowest-scoring individual not on an advancing team qualify for the NCAA championship tournament May 19-24 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona.

The teams seeded ahead of Texas Tech at the Pullman Regional are Stanford, Baylor, Southern California, Clemson and Kentucky. The teams seeded behind Tech are Houston, North Carolina, Nevada-Las Vegas, Sacramento State, Cal Poly and Wisconsin-Green Bay.

Frenship graduate Haley Vargas, now a senior at Kansas State, is one of the six individual medalists assigned to the NCAA San Antonio Regional. That event will be played at TPC San Antonio.
