Abilene-area weather update: Roads drivable now but conditions will deteriorate

The city of Abilene's administration, emergency management coordinators and partner organizations met at Wednesday afternoon to review the latest information on the winter weather entering the area.

Roads are wet, but with no accumulation of sleet, which has begun to fall, the city said in a statement.

The National Weather Service reports most expected accumulation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, with a projected 1 to 4 inches of snow.

There is a 90% probability of 1 inch or more, a 73% probability of 2 inches or more and a 15% probability of 4 inches or more.

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) issued a news release just before noon stating it will have sufficient generation to meet demand during the winter weather event.

AEP Texas is ready to respond to power outages due to ice on lines and tree limbs.

ATMOS Energy said gas capacity is sufficient to meet demand during this winter weather event.

The city reported its water utility facilities are operational.

The National Guard will be providing three to six Humvees to assist authorities with transportation across the area. An ambulance and wrecker are stationed at Dyess Air Force Base to assist with winter response, if needed.

Reports from the Big Country

The Sweetwater Police Department put out a statement just before 1 p.m. indicating road conditions were quickly deteriorating west of Abilene, with sleet mixing with rain to cause slush.

The Jones County Sheriff's Office reported just before 2 p.m. that U.S. Highways 83/84 between Anson and Hamlin was icing over, though still drivable.
