Abilene Cooper boys go 2-1 at Canyon Reef Basketball Tournament in Snyder

The Cooper boys basketball team finished 2-1 at the two-day Canyon Reef Basketball Tournament in Snyder on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Cougars (10-7) started with a 45-36 win against the host Tigers before beating Fabens 59-32 on Day 1.

Jalen Cherry picked up where he left off, scoring 20 and 21 points in the wins, respectively. Colin Reed also had double figures offensively in both games, scoring 10 against Snyder and breaking out for 18 against Fabens. Andrew Gonzalez had 10 points against Snyder and Jaelyn Rivera had nine against Fabens.

But on Wednesday, Cooper ended up on the wrong end of a 79-71 shootout loss to Amarillo Caprock.

Cherry made six 3-pointers and finished with 20 points, to average 20.3 points per game in the tournament, to lead the Cougars, Willis knocked down three from long range to finish with 18 points while Gonzalez and Rivera added 12 points each.

Cooper will play a single game at Sweetwater on Friday to close out the 2021 calendar year.
