Abilene Cooper girls beat Springtown, tie Kennedale to wrap up Castleberry soccer tourney

FORT WORTH - Avianna Varela banked a shot off the goal post, and Lexi McWhorter made the goal stand up as Cooper beat Springtown 1-0 at the Castleberry Lady Lions girls soccer tournament Friday.

Cooper wrapped up the tournament with a 3-3 tie against Kennedale. Kayla Dillon scored two goals for the Lady Coogs, while Varela had one. Dillon scored her first off an assist from Aaliyah Jackson as Cooper trailed 2-1 at halftime. Varela and Dillon each scored in the second half. Dillon’s second goal, assisted by Anita Alcantar, gave the Lady Coogs a 3-2 lead with eight minutes to play. McWhorter finished the tournament with 15 saves.

But Angelina Olmos, a Dallas Baptist signee, got her third goal with two minutes remaining.

Cooper opened the tournament Thursday with a 6-1 loss to Alvarado Jackson had the Lady Coogs’ lone goal off an assist from Lune Finch. Cooper had two forwards go down with injuries in the game, and the team played with a new back line and goalie because of injuries and COVID-19 issues.

The tournament was scheduled to finish Saturday, but it was canceled because of the threat of bad weather.

Cooper (3-3-1) plays Sweetwater at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in a nondistrict game at Shotwell Stadium.
