Abilene Cooper hires Lubbock native Brandon Hudson as girls basketball coach

Abilene Cooper has found the next leader for its girls basketball program.

The school announced Thursday that Brandon Hudson will be the head coach for the Lady Cougars, starting in the fall.

“Brandon Hudson is a shining star in the coaching profession,” Abilene ISD Executive Director of Athletics Jim Garfield said. “We believe that the girls are going to love playing for him. He has a great basketball IQ and will bring an up-tempo style of play to Cooper High School.”

Hudson succeeds Arsenio Geter, who in June returned to San Angelo Central, where he had coached previously.

Geter posted a 47-47 record during his three seasons at Cooper, coming to Abilene in July 2019 from Hondo.

Hudson spent the past two seasons as the head coach of Fort Bend Marshall. Before that, Hudson head coached at Clear Brook High School for two years.

Hudson is from Lubbock and attended Texas Tech University. He began his coaching career in 2012 as an assistant at Lubbock Estacado before moving to the Houston area.

After several years in southeast Texas, Hudson looks forward to his first head coaching gig in west Texas.

“My excitement level is off the charts, and I can’t wait to get to Abilene and get started,” Hudson said. “The opportunity to return to West Texas was a big draw when I began thinking about this job, not to mention the great reputation of Cooper High School. My top priority is to come in and start building relationships with the players and coaches and then get to work.”
