Abilene Cooper, Wylie roll through AISD tennis tournament unbeaten

Cooper and Wylie both went 4-0 at the Abilene ISD team tennis tournament during the weekend, while Abilene High went 3-1.

Cooper, ranked No. 23 in the Texas Tennis Coaches Association’s Class 5A state poll, beat Hobbs, N.M., 15-3 and Odessa High 18-1 on Friday. The Cougars wrapped up the tournament with a 15-1 win over Burkburnett and 12-0 win over Odessa Permian.

There was no bracket play in the tournament. Each team played four matches.

Cooper (13-2) plays San Angelo Central at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday in a non-district match at the Cooper courts.

Wylie, ranked No. 1 in Class 5A, beat No. 15 4A Hereford 17-2 and Permian 19-2 on Friday, before beating Midland High 17-2 and No. 3 4A Vernon 17-0 on Saturday.

“Had a great weekend,” Wylie coach Mark Hathron said. “We played a lot of kids, saw a lot of good, well-coached teams, and I felt like we got better. Can’t wait to start district.”

The Bulldogs (15-1) play Central at 4 p.m. Sept. 8 in a non-district match at Wylie.

Abilene High, ranked No. 17 in Class 5A, beat Hobbs 18-1, but lost to Canyon Randall 13-3 on Friday. Randall is ranked No. 1 in Class 4A after dropping from 5A this season. The Eagles beat Hereford 15-4 and Vernon 10-7 on Saturday.

“We got a lot of match play this weekend,” AHS coach Stacy Bryan said. “It was hot, (and) the kids played a lot of tennis. Yet, at the end of the day on Saturday, they were still battling. The heat and long matches didn’t phase them. I was especially proud against Vernon. We did not play particularly well in doubles and was down 2-5, yet we battled back in singles.”

The Eagles (15-2) play Lubbock Monterey in the District 4-5A opener Sept. 10 at the AHS courts.
