Abilene High grad Green highlights McMurry's all-century baseball team

McMurry, which is celebrating its centennial, will name its all-century athletic teams this year, beginning with baseball on Wednesday.

The remaining teams will be released each week.

Five members of the McMurry Hall of Honor headline the baseball team in 2006 grad Albert Carrizales, Joe Fichera (2000), Judge Howard Green (1943, Josh Lee (2005) and Jacob Mullin (2012).

ALL-CENTURY BASEBALL TEAM

Jeff Byrd (2001)

A two-time all-American Southwest Conference honoree, he remains among the program’s top 30 in several offensive categories.

He led the 1999 squad with a .435 batting average.

Albert Carrizales (2006)

Carrizales has the school record for most games played at 179 – along with Joe Fichera (1996-2000).

The Fort Worth native started his career during the 2003 season and earned American Southwest Conference Freshman of the Year honors.

He was a four-time all-conference shortstop, a four-time all-region shortstop and a 2005 All-American.

Derek David (2009)

David was named the 2008 player of the year by the American Baseball Coaches Association, National Collegiate Baseball Writers, D3Baseball.com Player of Year, and he was a two-time ABCA All-American.

His .704 career slugging average is still a school record, and David also maintains single-season bests in home runs, RBI, and total bases among a list of eight marks.

Josh Duwe (2001)

Duwe, the 2001 American Southwest Conference tournament Most Valuable Player, was tabbed all-region by the American Baseball Coaches Association during his two seasons at McMurry.

He had a combined 15-4 record, a 2.48 earned run average and 123 strikeouts in his McMurry career.

Greg Erickson (2006)

His 20 career wins as a pitcher are tied for the second-most in program history.

The two-time American Baseball Coaches Association all-region honoree also is within the top five in starts (35), strikeouts (173), innings pitched (206 and two-thirds) and complete games (13).

Joe Fichera (2000)

He was the American Southwest Conference Player of the Year in 1998, a three-time all-ASC first-team selection and a first-team all-American in 1998.

Fichera helped McMurry to the first of its four ASC Championships and NCAA National Tournament appearances as a junior in 1998.

In aiding coach Lee Driggers to resume the program in 1996, he recorded four hits and the first stolen base in the McMurry modern era against Wayland Baptist in the War Hawks’ first game after a 47-year absence.

Fichera remains among McMurry’s all-time leaders in stolen bases, games played, and hits.

Chris Fritch (2002)

The conference’s Freshman of the Year in 1998, Fritch supplied plenty of power for the War Hawks during his four years in Abilene. A two-time all-conference and all-region awardee, he led the team in on-base percentage (.422), slugging percentage (.597), total bases (86), RBI (33), home runs (eight) and doubles (eight) as a senior.

Michael Gonzales (2020)

A career .343 hitter, Gonzales picked up two all-American Southwest Conference accolades. He drilled 29 doubles and drove in better than 60 runs during his collegiate career.

Judge Howard Green (1943)

The Abilene High grad became synonymous with the word baseball not only on the McMurry campus but also around the state and across the U.S.

Not only was he an outstanding player for McMurry, but he was also renowned for his roles in management and administration in the sport.

Green became a star for McMurry under coach R.I. Willis in the early 1940s. At that time, McMurry was a perennial power in the Abilene City League, and Green was one of the circuit’s premier players.

He had a career batting average of just over .300 and led the League in batting twice (1941 and 1943). In 1941, Green and McMurry won the City League crown by defeating ACU six-consecutive times, including three straight in playoff games.

Nick Hamel (2022)

A two-time all-American Baseball Coaches Association and American Southwest Conference selection, Hamel is the program’s all-time leader in saves (10).

He turned out to be nearly indispensable for head coach Josh Lee’s squads, also hitting .300 or higher in three seasons, including a .426 mark as a senior toward 95 RBI and a .508 slugging percentage for his career.

Josh Lee (2005)

Lee, McMurry’s current head coach, played from 2001-04 and had one of the most successful careers in program history.

He was named the 2001 American Southwest Conference Freshman of the Year, then went on to win the ASC Player of the Year in 2003 and 2004.

He was a four-time all-conference and two-time all-region selection and earned his senior year ABCA First Team All-American status.

Lee is the only player in program history to win back-to-back American Southwest Conference Player of the Year Awards. He is one of three McMurry players in history to hit for the cycle.

Lee ranks top ten all-time in career hits, games played, homers, RBI, total bases, slugging, walks, victories, games started, innings pitched, pitching strikeouts, and ERA.

He holds the school record for complete games with 17 and won 20 games in 39 starts.

Jake Mullin (2012)

A four-year team member in baseball and football, Mullin was named the ASC’s Male Athlete of the Year following the 2009-10 academic year.

On the diamond, his story was remarkable. Mullin was a two-time all-conference and all-region honoree and gained All-American and ASC Player of the Year accolades in 2010.

His .570 on-base percentage in 2010 is still a single-season record.

Nick Schafer (2007)

One of the top arms in War Hawk history, Schafer registered 20 victories, 34 starts, 146 strikeouts and a career 3.96 ERA, ranking among the all-time career marks.

His senior slate featured all-American Southwest Conference and American Baseball Coaches Association all-region awards.

Ryan Snyder (1999)

Snyder’s 26 wins, 56 appearances, 49 starts, 313 and two-thirds innings pitched, and 17 complete games are still program career bests.

His impressive staff numbers earned him two all-American Southwest Conference and one all-American Baseball Coaches Association honor.

Matt Thompson (2012)

Thompson’s senior year saw him register for honorable mention and all-region awards from D3Baseball.com. He was also a three-time all-American Southwest Conference selection.

Thompson stands second in career stolen bases (28) and triples (14).

Brent Vorhees (2008)

Vorhees’ offensive prowess still holds down several sections of the McMurry University record book.

His 45-round trippers, 196 RBI, and 402 total bases are career-bests. His plate skills led him to first-team All-American honors from D3Baseball.com in 2007 and all-region recognition the same year.

Vorhees was also a two-time all-American Southwest Conference nod.

Jim Wollscheid (1999)

His 210 career Ks, which translate to 10.14 strikeouts per nine innings, is a school record. His eight saves and 20 wins are tied for the second highest.

Wollscheid was a two-time all-American Southwest Conference and past all-region awardee.

Mike Wylie (2003)

Wylie’s starting pitching stature was equaled by few. He is within the program’s all-time top 10 in complete games (11), innings pitched (205), strikeouts (153), starts (33), wins (20), and wins percentage (.667).
