What the Abilene Reporter-News liked and disliked: Dress for the heat

LIKES

1. Gas price dipping. We're still paying well over $4, but the local priced has dropped from a high of $4.69 to $4.27 at some pumps. That's some relief.

2. Dixie Pig open again. For those who missed breakfast and lunch at the iconic south Abilene diner, good news. The air conditioning is fixed and, as John Denver once sang, "the cakes are on the griddle."

3. Two cool cats. Former longtime Reporter-News reporter Roy Jones on Thursday posted a photo of Dylon Davis, the former Cooper football standout now at Midwestern, and K.J. Kelley, the former Cooper football standout who just graduated from East Texas Baptist. They were holding catfish, supposedly the last fish left in a stock tank that's drying up in the heat/drought. The tank a year ago, Jones reported, covered an acre and was 15 feet deep. Now, it's less than a foot in depth. Those catfish looked good enough to be served fried with cole slaw and okra, but they will live another day in the water near Seabee Park.

4. Helmets off for Bo. You have to love the dedication of Bo Green, who really did attempt his 80-mile bike ride at age 80 to benefit Meals on Wheels. We are firmly supportive of him doing 100 miles when he's 100 ...

5. McMurry moves forward. Groundbreaking last week to add to Garrison Student Center at McMurry is another step toward the university's 100th anniversary in 2023.

DISLIKES

1. The heat goes on. This has become a regular feature in our list. No rain, hot temperatures. We hit 33 days at 100 or hotter Saturday and are marching toward the all-time top 10.

MILESTONE

1. -30- The Abilene City Council on Thursday voted to demolish the former Reporter-News building at the corner of South First and Cypress streets. It had become the property of the Abilene Improvement Corporation. It seems the best thing to do, freeing strategic downtown property across from a park and a museum. But for those of us who worked there for years, it will be a sad day when the building comes down.

HMMM

1. Swap meet. At the Juneteenth celebration at Stevenson Park, Mayor Anthony Williams introduced his longtime friend, Bobby Walker - better known as DJ Skidd. He was the man providing the soundtrack for this "Saturday in the Park." They are Abilene High School classmates, Class of 1987. Skidd is a shade taller and has more gray in his beard, mainly because he has more beard. It was suggested that before Williams exits his role as mayor, the two trade places. Mayor Skidd should head the city for a day, and DJ AW do the music. Who would have more fun?

2. Let's see, how to dress? Dress codes were to be relaxed Saturday in Abilene. At the Coliseum, men in tight shorts were wrestling. At Play Faire Park, folks were dressed as the characters from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." And at Abilene Community Theatre, it was drag queen bingo. Boots and jeans still worked — this is West Texas, after all — but weren't quite as fun.

3. Not happy with us. An ARN reader was disappointed at the display of cleavage in a photo submitted for the obituary page last week. Another reader was not happy with a photo on the front page this month that depicted a man on a toilet. As we say, "Without or with offense to friends or foes, we sketch your world exactly as it goes."
