Abilene schools have little to cheer about on final day of Region I-5A track meet

LUBBOCK – A day after Wylie’s Indiah Maroney punched her ticket it to state with a second-place finish in the girls high jump, Abilene schools failed to qualify in other events Saturday at the Region I-5A track and field meet at Lowrey Stadium.

Cooper’s Jazlyn Hatcher and Lawrence Diles had the best finishes on the final day of the meet – both taking sixth in an event.

Hatcher, a sophomore, finished sixth in the girls long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 8 inches. Mansfield Timberview junior Taylor Fingers won it with 19-3¾ to beat out teammate Princess Miller (18-7¼).

Diles took sixth in the boys’ 300-meter hurdles with a time of 40.81 seconds. The senior qualified fifth in prelims Friday with a 39.99.

Mansfield Timberview sophomore Cameron Bates won the event (37.44), and Justin Northwest junior Kenan Reil was second (38.17).

Diles was one of the favorites in the 110 hurdles earlier in the day but finished seventh with a 15.61. Diles went into the event with the best time from the area meet (14.45), and he ran a personal-best 14.37 in winning the District 4-5A meet.

He also qualified No. 3 in the prelims Friday with a 14.52.

Bates, who ran a personal-best 13.88 this season, won the 110 hurdles with a 14.36, and Reil was second (14.58). Wylie’s Holden Atwood, who had finished second to Diles at the district and area meets, did not qualify for the finals.

Cooper sophomore Anne-Lie Waite was seventh in the girls 200 (26.01).

Wylie senior Avery Brekke and Cooper senior Jacobe Moore finished seventh and eighth, respectively, in the boys discus. Brekke threw 151-8, and Moore threw 148-1. Wylie junior Ryan Blake was 11th (136-1).

Wylie sophomore Braden Regala was seventh in the boys 100 (11.04).

Wylie’s foursome of Jahnia George, Sarah Sanchez, Rozlyn Rumsey and M’Lia finished eighth in the girls 400 relay (49.40).

Timberview won both the boys and girls team titles.

The boys scored 80 points to beat Amarillo High (74), and Justin Northwest was third (48). Lubbock Monterey, which competes in District 4-5A with Cooper and Wylie, was fourth (36).

Timberview ran away with the girls title (112), followed by Canyon Randall (63) and Burleson Centennial (56).

Lubbock-Cooper and Wylie had the best showing among 4-5A teams, finishing 13th and 15th respectively with 12 and 9 points.
