Abilene Wylie knocks off No. 11 Class 6A Keller to remain unbeaten in tennis

Wylie, ranked No. 2 in the Texas Tennis Coaches Association’s Class 5A preseason poll, beat No. 11 Class 6A Keller 12-6 in the Bulldogs’ home opener Tuesday at the Wylie courts.

Wylie (6-0) was buoyed by two three-set victories by its top two girls singles players – Carly Bontke and Stealey Crousen. Bontke outlasted Sofia Zulim 6-4, 4-6, 10-8, while Crousen overcame a 6-3 loss in the first set to win 6-3, 10-7.

“Sat a couple of kids that were beat up a bit, but all the kids stepped up,” Wylie coach Mark Hathorn said. “That’s a really good team we beat today. I’m proud of our fight on the court. We just keep getting better.”

The Keller Indians were scheduled to play Abilene High (5-1) later in the day Tuesday, but the match was canceled because of rain.

Wylie plays Frisco Heritage at 2 p.m. Thursday in Frisco, before playing Allen at 8 a.m. Friday in the opening round of the Plano West Invitational in Allen.

Abilene High plays matches on the road Wednesday – Wichita Falls Rider (9 a.m.) and Iowa Park (2 p.m.).
