Abilene Wylie tennis wraps up Plano West Invitational with win over Frisco Centennial
PLANO - Wylie beat Frisco Centennial 10-5 in a consolation bracket tennis match at the Plano West Invitational on Saturday.
It was a far different outcome than the first time the two teams met Aug. 5 in Frisco, when Wylie edged the Titans 10-9.
“Great win today against Centennial,” Wylie coach Mark Hathorn said. “I thought we played a lot better today in spots against them this time. Our team just works hard and makes adjustments and knows how to win.”
The Wylie girls won three of the four singles matches played and swept all three doubles matches. Carly Bontke, Stealey Crousen and Kindall Alford each won in singles, while Crousen and Suhejla Qinami, Bontke and Alford and Kate Delgado and Truleigh Conover won in doubles.
Trevor Short, Connor Brown and Marshall McPherson each won in boys singles, while Centennial swept the boys doubles matches.
Brandon Cowling and Lyndsey Ayala won in mixed doubles.
Wylie (9-1) opened the tournament with a 10-4 loss to Class 6A state power Allen to snap a seven-match win streak, before beating Coppell 12-7.
“This was a great tournament for us before we start school Wednesday,” Hathorn said. “(We need to) get a little rest and get ready for a tough district in a few weeks.”
Wylie plays Del Rio and Kerrville Tivy on Saturday in San Angelo.
