Abilene Wylie's Fellona nabs bronze at region swim meet

LUBBOCK – Wylie’s Tessa Fellona finished third in the girls’ 100-meter backstroke at the Region I-5A swimming and diving championships Saturday at the Pete Ragus Aquatics Center.

Fellona, a senior, posted the only top-three finish for an Abilene swimmer at the meet, turning in a time of 1 minute, 4.76 seconds.

El Paso High’s Sofia Reese won the event (1:01.27), followed by Lubbock Coronado’s Brylee Watkins (1:01.93).

Wylie senior Caden Sauley was fourth in the boys’ 100 backstroke (1:02.48).

Fellona teamed with Alicia Correa, Rylee Messer and Julia Delauney to finish fifth in the 200 medley relay (2:05.42).

Raley Barton, Messer, Correa and Fellona also were fifth in the 200 free relay (1:51.47). Cooper’s foursome of Bronwyn Ward, Kadance Viel, Michelle Olivia-Junior and Linnova Baker was eighth (2:05.04).

Teagan Daugherty, Benjamin Jackson, Jared Heidema and Sauley finished sixth in the boys’ 200 free relay (1:36.72).

Wylie’s Lexie Kidman, Messer, Barton and Delauney were seventh in the girls’ 100 free relay (4:17.56).

The Bulldogs’ Lanton Thompson teamed with J.T. Partin, Tiegan Pacheco and Heidema to finish eighth in the boys’ 400 free relay (3:50.75).

Abilene High’s Landon Schroeder, Levin Huddleston, Jayden Palacios and Finn Voss were eighth in the boys’ 200 medley relay (1:58.82).

El Paso High swept the team titles. The EP boys scored 460 points, beating ubbock High (360). Wylie was 10th (75), while AHS was 12th (33) and Cooper was 17th (14).

The EP girls won with 472 points, followed by Lubbock High (409), Lubbock Coronado (303), Amarillo High (177) and Wylie (146). Cooper was 16th (30), and AHS was 17th (18).

The top two finishers in each event advance to the state meet, along with the next eight best times among the four region meets in each event.

The Class 5A state meet will be Feb. 17-18 at the University of Texas’ Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin.
