Abingdon-Avon football team leads wire-to-wire against Iroquois West, advances to quarters

ABINGDON — The Abingdon-Avon High School football team never trailed in its Class 1A second round playoff game against Iroquois West on Saturday afternoon at Don Viar Memorial Field.

And the Tornadoes came away with a 55-30 victory over the Raiders.

With the win, A-Town has now done something its never done before, and that's advance to the quarterfinals.

The Tornadoes will hit the road to face the Mustangs of Ridgeview/Lexington — who handed Peru St. Bede a 47-20 second round loss — next weekend.

Abingdon-Avon scored three straight unanswered touchdowns versus Iroquis West and had three successful two-point conversions for a 24-0 lead after the first 12 minutes.

The Tornadoes added a pair of scores in the second quarter while the Raiders scored once, and A-Town was ahead 40-8 at the half.

A 2-yard touchdown run from senior quarterback Easten Schisler with 9:24 left in the fourth gave the Tornadoes a 48-16 advantage.

Senior Drake DeJaynes had a 43-yard scamper for a score with 7:05 remaining to put Abingdon-Avon ahead 55-22 over Iroquois West.

The Raiders' Trystyn Schacht got a good jump on an A-Town snap, snagged the ball while it was in midair and ran it back 65 yards with 30.6 seconds on the clock for the final score in the game.

By the numbers

Schisler completed 18 of 25 passes for 290 yards and three touchdowns. He also had 14 carries for 99 yards and a TD.

DeJaynes finished with 12 carries for 64 yards, a pair of TDs and he ran for two points twice. DeJaynes also had three catches for 51 yards and a touchdown.

Senior Parker Darst had four rushes for 25 yards and a touchdown, and he had two grabs for 20 yards and a TD for the Tornadoes.

Senior wideout Clay Slagel had seven receptions for 185 yards, and a pair of two-point conversions, and senior Parker Stoneking had three catches for 25 yards and a touchdown for A-Town.
