Abingdon-Avon falls to Ridgeview/Lexington in IHSA Class 1A football quarterfinals

COLFAX — The Abingdon-Avon High School football team saw its postseason run end Saturday afternoon.

The Tornadoes squared off with the Mustangs of Ridgeview/Lexington in Class 1A quarterfinal action, and A-Town was handed a 51-12 loss.

Abingdon-Avon (10-2) received the pigskin first after Ridgeview/Lexington (8-4) deferred, and the Tornadoes scored on the ninth play of their first drive.

Facing a fourth-and-four situation and 35 yards from the end zone, senior quarterback Easten Schisler connected with senior Parker Stoneking for a TD with 7:23 left in the first quarter. Sophomore Kellen Hook was stuffed on a two-point conversion run, and A-Town was ahead 6-0.

The Mustangs punched right back.

Ridgeview/Lexington ran eight plays on its first possession, and a 6-yard TD from junior Kaden Farrell and an extra point kick from senior Ben Peacock gave the Mustangs a 7-6 lead with 3:07 left in the first quarter.

On the Tornadoes' next drive, Schisler ended up getting picked off by Ridgeview/Lexington junior Logan Friedmansky with 2:15 left in the first, and the Mustangs found themselves only 27 yards from paydirt.

With 11:18 remaining in the second quarter, Farrell had a 3-yard TD scamper and senior Carter Coffman had a successful two-point conversion run for a 15-6 Ridgeview/Lexington lead.

Farrell scored from two yards out, and he ran the ball in for two points with 3:16 left in the second, and the Mustangs went ahead of the Tornadoes 23-6.

A-Town responded on its next drive, as senior Parker Darst broke the plane from four yards out with just over three minutes before the half. The Tornadoes' two-point conversion failed, and they trailed 23-12.

At the half, Ridgeview/Lexington held a 37-12 lead over Abingdon-Avon, and the Tornadoes wouldn't recover.

By the numbers

Schisler had eight carries for 84 yards. He completed 12 of 23 passes for 107 yards, and a TD, and Schisler was picked off three times.

Stoneking had two grabs for 50 yards and the aforementioned TD, and Hook had three catches for 25 yards.

Senior Drake DeJaynes had seven rushes for 31 yards, and he had five grabs for 26 yards. Senior Clay Slagel had two grabs for six yards, and Darst had six rushes for 31 yards and a TD for the Tornadoes, who combined for 252 rushing yards.

As a unit, the Mustangs galloped for 448 rushing yards and seven touchdowns in the affair.

Farrell finished with 165 yards on 27 carries, and he had four TDs. Friedmansky ended up with 88 rushing yards and a pair of scores. Coffman had 81 rushing yards and a TD, and he connected with Peacock for a 44-yard TD.
