Abingdon plans to address ‘failing sewer infrastructure’ thanks to funding

ABINGDON, Va. (WJHL) – The Town of Abingdon will soon address its “failing sewer infrastructure” thanks to funds from a state program, the town announced Monday.

A news release from the town states the DEQ Virginia Clean Water Revolving Loan Program granted funds for the upgrades.

According to the town, the funding will allow for more than $5 million in upgrades to the sewer infrastructure in the Abingdon town limits.

The work, referred to as Phase 1 repairs, will be focused in the Whites area and the eastern end of Valley Street along Town Creek. Abingdon leaders said in the release that they would work to communicate the construction and access to people living in those areas.

Phase 1 includes manhole repairs, spot repairs to underground sewer lines and maintenance and relining to certain segments of the system.

“The goal is to ensure the sewer system each resident relies on continues to function as expected,” the release states. “However, the system is aging, and many lines will need to be removed and replaced. The Town assures residents that minimizing the impact is the top priority. The contractor chosen to complete this work will be required to provide a top level of service to the residents.”

Abingdon will open bidding for Phase 1 of its multiyear Sanitary Sewer Maintenance and Repair Project on April 6. Once a contractor is selected, town leaders expect work to begin around July 1.

According to the release, Abingdon has also secured more funding for other infrastructure issues that were identified in a study. Other phases of the project will target more areas of the town.
