Abington heats up down the stretch to secure district spot, plus a look at the pairings

Abington has learned to help itself.

The Galloping Ghosts needed to get hot down the stretch to make the District One Class 6A playoffs. And it wasn't going to be easy.

With an NBA-like stretch run of five games in six days, it was time to strap up and play ball, and Abington did just that.

Thursday, the Ghosts defeated visiting Quakertown 54-36. On Friday, they closed out the regular season with a 56-31 triumph over Hatboro-Horsham to push their winning streak to five straight. The win gave them the No. 23 spot in the 24-team District One 6A tournament.

On Friday, Abington travels to No. 10 Conestoga to begin the district tournament. The winner of that game will play at No. 7 West Chester East, which has a bye, on Feb. 22.

"I told them to keep on fighting, that we're in it as long as they keep winning," said Abington head coach Charles Grasty. "This is a beautiful experience. I told them that we're with them. They've taken to what I've told them, and you can see the results. It's very encouraging."

Abington started shaky but was up 30-21 at halftime. A 17-9 run in the third pushed them to a 47-28 unshakeable advantage.

"We did what we had to do," said senior Derrius Lucas, who led Abington with 12 points, including 8-for-12 from the free throw line, against Quakertown. Against Hatboro-Horsham, he led the Ghosts with 16 points. "We needed to win."

And they did.
