Abortion-rights advocates plan rally at Jacksonville courthouse after Roe v. Wade overturned

An abortion-rights rally to protest the U.S. Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade will take place at 6 p.m. Friday at the Duval County Courthouse at 501 West Adams St.

In the 6-3 majority opinion, authored by Justice Samuel Alito, the justices held that “the Constitution makes no reference to abortion, and no such right is implicitly protected by any constitutional provision.”

Associate Justice Clarence Thomas said in a concurring opinion the Supreme Court should "reconsider" other rights including the right to same-sex marriage, the right to interracial marriage and the right to access contraception.

The time of the rally was originally set to be 5 p.m. but was later changed to 6 p.m. due to a heat advisory, according to a Jax Action Committee tweet.

A chance of scattered thunderstorms in Jacksonville expected to start at 7 p.m. could affect turnout, duration or other delays or changes for the protest.
