Abortion rights protest in St. George follows leaked draft proposal to overturn Roe v. Wade

A group of protesters marched through downtown St. George on Thursday, calling for abortion rights in the wake of a leaked draft of a Supreme Court opinion indicating the court is poised to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade case.

Some passing cars honked while some cheered and voiced support. There were no reported confrontations.

“We're gathered here today to protest what's going on in the Supreme Court," said Jazmen Antoine, one of the protesters. "It is so messed up. This is 2022. It's going to open up a can of worms that nobody else is ready for. Roe was founded with the right to privacy. Do you know what else was? So was gay marriage and interracial marriage. They're going to come after all of us."

Many of the protesters found the gathering through social media. Participants said they were hoping for a bigger turnout but only about two dozen people showed up. Another group of protesters were organizing a second demonstration, planning to start near 200 E. St. George Blvd. on Friday, May 6, at 6 p.m.

“I think once people see that there are people here that like actually do care, it might only change one person's opinion, but like, at least there's that,” abortion-rights protester Mateo Gonzales said.

Starting on Mother's Day, TikTok creators like Whitneywithheart are calling on all abortion-rights supporters to start a strike and show support through social media. The organization ProChoice with Heart began the protest and has a petition to end the overturning of Roe v. Wade.
