Absentee voting starts June 27 for Springfield marijuana tax ballot issue

If you have an opinion on the proposed additional marijuana tax for Springfield, you'll soon be able to share it.

Absentee voting starts June 27 for the Aug. 8 special municipal election, according to a press release from Greene County.

The special election only has one issue on the ballot: Whether the city of Springfield should impose an additional 3% tax on the sale of recreational marijuana. Proceeds from that tax would go toward public safety, mental health services, housing, and substance abuse services, according to the ballot.

Only residents of the city of Springfield are eligible to vote in this election.

In-person absentee voting will be available at the Greene County Elections Center, 1126 BoonvilleAve. in Springfield, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each Monday to Friday up to and including the day prior tothe election.

To vote in-person absentee, voters must present a valid Missouri driver or non-driver license; a valid military ID, including a veteran's ID card; a valid U.S. passport; another photo ID issued by the U.S. or the state of Missouri, which is either not expired or expired after the date of the most recent general election.

To vote absentee by mail, voters can submit a handwritten request or complete the fillable formavailable at https://vote.greenecountymo.gov. These requests must be signed by the voters and receivedin the Office of the County Clerk no later than 5 p.m. July 26.

Mailed ballots must be voted, notarized, returned by mail, and received in the Office of theCounty Clerk before 7 p.m. on Election Day, Aug. 8.
