The omicron variant has continued to tighten its grip on the state, racking up cases at a record rate. The variant is also more likely to cause break through infections.

The recent surge has even placed a strain on the state's hospital system as the state's health care system experiences widespread staffing shortages.

In San Francisco, medical first responders were urging residents to only call 911 in a dire situation.

"Only call 911 or go to the emergency [department] for life-threatening medical emergencies,” the San Francisco Department of Emergency Management tweeted over weekend. "Keep medics available for life-threatening situations."

The surge has also become a challenge for those looking for a negative test to return to social activities or work after a possible exposure to the virus as the state experiences testing shortages.

Gov. Gavin Newsom on Friday announced the activation of the California National Guard to support local sites as the state experiences a testing shortage amid a dire surge in COVID-19 cases driven by the omicron variant.

"We have robust testing in California, we always want more, we're seeking to get more, but that testing is a key part of keeping Californians knowledgeable about who's infected, who's exposed and helping us keep transmission in a more manageable place," said Dr. Mark Ghaly, the state's health secretary, at a news briefing last week.
